Reading Notes: Kacha and Devayani

Kacha and Devayani

Kacha went to be trained by the guru Shukracharya in order to learn the Sanjivani Mantra, which would allow those to revive themselves from the dead. While there, he met Shukracharya's daughter Devayani. Devayani was determined to marry Kacha as soon as he finished his education. This made others jealous, as they desired Devayani.

One evening, Kacha did not return home from watching the cattle graze. Devayani was distraught at his disappearance and begged her father to go with her to find him using his powers. He eventually found Kacha dead in the forest and realized the other students had killed him. He revived Kacha with his powers for his daughter. The other students, however, killed him again in the forest. Devayani's father once again revived him out of love for his daughter.

In order to try and trick Shukracharya to not revive Kacha, the students killed Kacha again and then cremated him. They mixed his ashes with Shukracharya's wine so that whenever he used his powers to find Kacha, he would be in his belly. This made Devayani very upset, as bringing back Kacha inside his belly would be killing Shukracharya. In order to bypass death, he taught Kacha the Sanjivani Mantra inside of his belly.  Thus, whenever he revived Kacha, Kacha revived Shukracharya!

Having completed his mission of learning the Sanjivani Mantra, Kacha request to leave. In hopes that he would stay there, Devayani confessed her love. Kacha replies that he would technically now be her brother since he emerged from her father's stomach. This angered Devayani and she cursed him to never be able to use the Sanjivani Mantra. Kacha told her that even though he could never use it himself, he would teach the other gods. Thus, he traveled to Indra's abode and never saw Devayani again.
